{"id":18,"date":"2015-03-24T18:04:58","date_gmt":"2015-03-24T18:04:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anthropology.uncg.edu\/?page_id=7"},"modified":"2024-02-12T16:51:35","modified_gmt":"2024-02-12T21:51:35","slug":"anthropology-a-21st-century-major","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/anthropology.uncg.edu\/","title":{"rendered":"Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 class=\"welcome\">Anthropology: A 21st Century Major<\/h1>\n<p><strong>Anthropology is the holistic study of the human experience<\/strong>.&nbsp; What this means is that Anthropologists share an interest in all aspects of being human, both in today\u2019s world and in the past.&nbsp; Our field exists at the intersection of the Humanities, the Social Sciences, and the Natural Sciences, and appeals to a <strong>diverse group of students<\/strong> who come to Anthropology from many different backgrounds with diverse life experiences and varied intellectual interests.<\/p>\n<p>Anthropologists explore the\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Global diversity<\/strong> of human cultures,<\/li>\n<li><strong>History<\/strong> and <strong>prehistory<\/strong> of human groups,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Linguistic diversity<\/strong> and modes of communication of people and groups,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Biological diversity<\/strong> and <strong>evolutionary history<\/strong> of humans and our primate relatives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The study of Anthropology provides students with the intellectual and practical skills for navigating our complex, global, 21st century world by\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Encouraging <strong>cross-cultural<\/strong> and <strong>international<\/strong> <strong>experiences<\/strong> and providing a means for understanding cultures and ways of life, our own as well as others,<\/li>\n<li>Combining classroom study with <strong>real world experience<\/strong> via field schools, involvement in faculty research in the field and the lab, and internships in the broader community and workplace,<\/li>\n<li>Providing a broad <strong>Liberal Arts<\/strong> education emphasizing <strong>critical thinking<\/strong>, <strong>close reading<\/strong>, and both <strong>persuasive and analytical writing<\/strong> skills,<\/li>\n<li>Exploring the meanings of <strong>human diversity<\/strong> across both time and space, including biological, cultural, and linguistic diversity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Studying Anthropology can be a <strong>transformative experience<\/strong> for many students. While not all Anthropology majors will become practicing anthropologists, many will find that their anthropological education informs their personal life, their career choices, and even the way they see the world long after graduation.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>This program is being discontinued pending SACSCOC approval and is not accepting applications for admission.
